Creating healthy school lunches is the key to sustaining their body to get through the day!
- Write a list of each child’s favourite sandwich topping, fruit,
vegetables and snacks. – Use our free Printables for Fruit, Veges, Dairy, Carbs and Protein ideas.
- Pre-cut fruit and vegetables and pop them in airtight containers in the fridge the night before.
- A small container of cubes of cheese, a container of watermelon cubes, strawberries or slices of carrots would be great to bring to school for crunch and sip, fruit time or morning tea.
- Dip fruit like apples and bananas in citrus juice (lemon or orange juice) or soda water to prevent browning.
- Bake in bulk (when you have some spare time) and freeze savoury and sweet muffins, scrolls, pikelets, scones for quick lunchbox snacks.
- Chill cooked foods (like hard boiled eggs) before packing the lunchbox.
- Pack leftovers straight into the lunchbox the night before. (corn cobs, pasta).
- Cut food into appropriate bite size pieces to encourage maximum food is eaten in limited time.
- Put the lunchbox inside an insulated lunch bag that will hold an ice pack and lunch box, to keep everything cool for several hours.
- Choose an easy to open but leak proof water bottle. In summer months add ice cubes or freeze and wrap in a tea towel.
- Try to avoid sending junk food in packets, these processed foods are not good for growing children and create a lot of rubbish in the school grounds.
